Comparison
Berryin vs. building your own ordering system
A custom build is a product commitment, not a project — and it never really finishes.
The build is the cheap part
Version one is the smallest cost. Payments, edge cases, maintenance and the second developer are the rest.
Restaurants are not software companies
A custom system makes you responsible for uptime during your own dinner rush.
You still own your data
Choosing a platform does not mean giving up your menu, customers or order history — those stay yours and exportable.
Side by side
| Criterion | Berryin | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | About a week | Typically months |
| Upfront cost | A monthly subscription | A development budget |
| Ongoing cost | Included in the subscription | Hosting plus a developer on call |
| Mobile apps | Customer and rider apps available | A separate project each |
| Who fixes it at 9pm | Us | Whoever built it, if reachable |
| New features | Ship on the platform | Each one is a new quote |
When building genuinely is the right call
If your concept depends on something no platform does — an unusual fulfilment model, a deep integration with your own systems — a custom build can be justified. That is a real situation and we will tell you when we think you are in it.
What rarely justifies it is wanting a specific look or a handful of fields, both of which are configuration problems dressed up as engineering ones.
The maintenance nobody quotes for
A custom ordering system needs someone available when a payment gateway changes, when an OS update breaks the app, and when an order fails during a Friday rush.
That ongoing availability is usually the largest lifetime cost, and it is almost never in the original quote.
